Worldly Sophistication Virginia Bungalow

After moving into their first home after living in DC rentals for years, this couple was lost with how best to upgrade to house-sized furniture that spoke to their design style, while also being able to withstand the coming years of raising children.

After looking over their intake form and inspiration board, I helped identify their design style as vintage chic with eclectic touches and plenty of worldly influence. If a well-traveled Ivy League professor married a funky artist who only wears thrifted clothes, this is what their home would look like. We found that their favorite colors of blue and red balanced nicely with some dark olive touches, different wood tones, and antique brass.

With the built-ins and fireplace, this room already had some great potential. The couple fell in love with the natural light, but the large space and high traffic flow to the sliding doors presented challenges. For budgetary reasons, we held back on potential paint options and focused on bringing in vintage pieces to match the client's design vision.

The pleated skirt on the couch brought in a touch of classic upholstery, contrasted with the funky texture of the upholstered ottoman coffee table. The Thomas McKnight serigraph hangs above the couch as the room's focal point.

Their existing sideboard acts as a media cabinet for their record player. The blue entryway cabinet offers tons of functional storage and a pop of color.

Layered curtains hung to match the width of the bay window's curtains helps give the room some symmetry, as well as more texture. Their well-loved leather recliner gets to find a new corner to call home.

With a new fireplace screen and artwork for the Frame TV, the fireplace already has more character. Hanging art from the built-in bookcase adds depth, and the new olive green glider will be the home for plenty of naps.
